The Moment I took a decision to become a change maker

By Aline Niyigena.

There was no spotlight.

No crowd cheering.

No perfect moment.

It happened during an East African Business Council meeting. A normal day, filled with policy discussions and trade plans. But while others were focused on markets and strategies, my mind wandered somewhere deeper  to the brilliant young African women I know. Women with powerful ideas, sharp intelligence, and passionate hearts.

I realized how many of us are waiting.

Waiting to be chosen.

Waiting for someone to say, “You’re ready.”

Waiting for the right job, the right time, the right approval.

And suddenly, a quiet but bold voice inside me said,

“No more waiting.”

Her Rise Africa was born from that exact moment.

A deep knowing that we are not here to be invisible.

We are not here to sit quietly on the sidelines.

We are not here to fit into small spaces.

We are here to lead, rise, and own our power.

I created this blog because I needed a space that mirrors who we are becoming not the outdated labels placed on us. A space where we don’t shrink. A space where African women are seen, heard, and celebrated not someday, but now.

As I began this journey, I held close the words of Wangari Maathai, a fearless Kenyan Pan-Africanist and Nobel Peace Prize winner. She once said:

“The higher you go, the fewer women there are. So we have to raise our voices louder, and claim the space that is rightfully ours.”

Her words remind me: our rise is not selfish it’s necessary

This isn’t just another blog. It’s my way of making space first for myself, then for all of us.

In this space, you’ll find:

Stories of real rising not the perfect version, but the process.

Reflections on womanhood, leadership, and legacy.

Bold truths I’m learning as a young African woman who refuses to settle.

Whether it’s about identity, courage, failure, dreams, or impact  I’m writing from a place of growth, not arrival. Because rising is messy. It’s uncomfortable. But it’s also beautiful and unstoppable.

A Final Note to You

To every African woman reading this:

You are not too young.

You are not too late.

You are not too much.

You are not too little.

You are ready.

Even if your voice shakes.

Even if you don’t have it all figured out.

This is your time.

This is your story.

This is your rise.

Welcome to Her Rise Africa.

Let’s rise and never look back.
